What is an Occupational Therapist?

Occupational Therapists (OT’s) are qualified health professionals who work with a wide range of people to do the things they need and want to in all aspects of life, such as taking care of oneself and others, working, volunteering, and participating in hobbies, interests and social events. 

Occupational Therapists call these activities “occupations”. Occupational therapists are experts in the relationships between what people do, their health, their well-being, and work with people to help make every day living easier. They support their clients to get the best out of their everyday life by:

  • Building their knowledge and skills

  • Finding new ways of doing activities

  • Changing the environment to suit their needs

Paediatric OT’s at the Social Learning Studio:

At the social learning studio our OT’s work to best meet the needs of the young person, dedicated to providing a client focused approach where children and families feel validated in their concerns, supported in difficult times, encouraged to be proactive and inspired to facilitate change.

We often use a fun and play based lenses, to support our young people with:

  • Developmental milestone support for those who are slower to walk, talk and play

  • Supporting the development of fine and gross motor skills

  • Support the development of motor planning or management of sensory difficulties

  • Help to make friends & development of social skills

  • School skills including handwriting, attending, concentrating and understanding the “classroom rules”

  • Emotional regulation and self-regulation to increase meaningful participation

  • Supporting the team around the child, to collaborate on

Mental Health OT’s at the social learning studio

Our team includes BAMH’s endorsed Occupational therapists who work with a wide range of clients experiencing mental health concerns to support them improve their ability to engage in the occupations they want to, need to, or are expected to do, by improving their skills, or by modifying the occupation or the environment.  They use a mix of occupational approaches, counselling approaches, and draw on any further accreditation they have completed to support our clients.
